In-House Counsellor/Mentor (1 year – Term position)
First Nation Healing Centre is currently seeking a Counselor/Mentor. The Counselor/Mentor position is a full-time, term position, hours can range during the day, evenings and weekends. The Counselor/Mentor will be responsible to check-in with families, mothers and their children, living in shelter. This worker will help mothers adjust to living in shelter and assist with children in common living spaces. This person will play an integral role in the physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual wellness of clients. The successful candidate will be part of an innovative team tasked with addressing family violence intervention, prevention, and outreach programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Will work under the supervision of the Executive Director, work closely with the Resident Support Worker, the Childcare worker, the Family Support Worker, Outreach worker
- Capable of managing their workload, prioritizing tasks with multiple mothers at a time
- To set-up counselling sessions with mothers, one-to-one, creating a space for them to debrief, discuss stress, coping mechanisms, and ensuring a listening ear.
- Work closely with emergency walk-in mothers and children, connecting with mental health professionals, healthcare providers, (Jordan’s principle, dental, clinical psychologists).
- To create a filing system, file upkeep, records, and administrational paper work
- Keeping up with correspondence and confidentiality protocols
- Helping mothers understand the wellness components (physical, mental, spiritual and emotional) and teaching them life skills
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with excellent verbal and written skills
- To assist RSW’s with urgent crisis calls. Have the ability to lead critical decision making in crisis. Also, must be open to working shifts.
- Must have the ability to balance two different streams of client base (In-house & Outreach)
- To assist in existing programs delivered by the centre. Develop and initiate a trauma focussed session for in-house programs.
Qualifications:
- Must have counseling designation. Will consider years of counseling practise and experience/designation in social work.
- Must have a driver’s a license
- The successful candidate will possess strong communications skills and be personable so that they can maintain a good, healthy mentorship relationship with clients/residents and staff
- Must be action oriented, demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Must submit a criminal record check child abuse registry check, and drug test (as per the FRCN By-Law 2004-01, Sec. 8.01);
