Notice Regarding Operating Off Road Vehicles

Chief and Council would like to remind everyone about the rules and regulations for operating Off-Road Vehicles such as ATVs, Mini bikes, Dune or Sport Buggy, Quads etc.
A few main points to operate an Off-Road Vehicles (ORV) are as follows (as written in the Off Road Vehicle Act):

  • Off-Road Vehicles must be registered and have number plates displaying the registration.
  • No person shall operate an off-road vehicle in any location, and the person who owns and off-road vehicle may not allow another person to drive it any location.
  • Operation of off-road vehicles on Highways shall not operate an ORV UPON or ACROSS a Roadway or the shoulder thereof; see Section 33 (1) A to D of the Off-Road Vehicle Act (attached).
  • You must hold a valid driver’s license if you travel on the shoulder of any roadway or anywhere else ORV use is allowed. If you do not have a valid licence you must stay in the ditch and cannot cross or travel on roads, shoulders or sidewalks.
  • No person under the age of 14 years of age shall operate an ORV unless properly supervised.
  • Helmet is required when operating an ORV.
  • No person shall operate an off-road vehicle while carrying more persons than the number for which the off- road vehicle was designed.
  • Seat Belt assembly required.

These are only a few points, attached is a copy of the Off-Road Vehicles Act which explains in detail what the full rules and regulations are for operating an ORV.
Please note that if these regulations are not followed that charges for these offences will be applied.
