FISHER RIVER CREE NATION, MB, June 16, 2017 /CNW/ – The Government of Canada believes every First Nation child should get the best start in life and is committed to working in partnership with First Nations to support a quality education and learning environments for their youth.
Today, the Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, congratulated Fisher River Cree Nation on the ground-breaking for its new grade 7 to 12 school. The school will provide an expanded and modern learning environment for middle and senior year students.
The school will accommodate classroom spaces for approximately 225 students and will include facilities for home economics and industrial arts, a gymnasium, library, computer lab, cafeteria, and outdoor recreational areas, including an area for community gatherings. The school will also include space for an Aboriginal Studies & Arts program, a Cultural Room, and design elements that express the Cree heritage of the First Nation.
Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada is supporting the Fisher River Cree Nation by providing $10 million for the construction of the school, which is targeted for completion in September 2018.
