Fisher River Cree Nation, Manitoba (Treaty 5) – On September 5, 2018; Community Members and visitors witnessed the official ribbon cutting and opening of the Fisher River High School – ochékwi sípí ka-ihspak kiskinohamakéwikamik.
As there is no actual Cree term for “School”, the Cree Name attached to the High School, ochékwi sípí ka-ihspak kiskinohamakéwikamik translates to Fisher River “House of Learning”.
The total cost of the new High School ended at 25.5 Million and a lot of the new amenities featured in the new school came from direct ideas from student input, said Davin Dumas, Director of Education for Fisher River Board of Education. Additionally, 3 Million of the total cost of the project was spent on the local economy; such as the hiring of local contractors and labor workers. 13 Million of the cost of the project came from the Government of Canada and the remaining balance which was financed through the First Nations Finance Authority (FNFA).
PENN-CO who was the general contractor for the project announced that many of the local contractors that were hired are being retained and will travel with the company to their next project to be apprenticed to reach their Red Seal; as well, they announced that Fisher River High School was the first modular build and only took 18 months to complete, making it the fasted school build in their company history.
