Saturday February 15, 2020, marked a huge milestone for the Community as Family, Friends, Leadership and Delegates came together to celebrate the first graduation for students who successfully completed the first Bachelor of Arts program that was located in Fisher River Cree Nation.
13 students completed the three year program which is part of a pilot program based in Fisher River Cree Nation and run through University College of the North. Students complete a bachelor of arts then move onto a bachelor in education – all within five years.

This past weekend history was made on the Fisher River Cree Nation as 13 individuals received their Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University College of the North.  This is the first time that university degrees were obtained and awarded in the community.  The graduation ceremony was filled with emotion and supported by a large number of family and community members.  Stories of the adversity our students had to overcome were shared and the success of each individual was celebrated.  We need to acknowledge the other students who will be completing the Bachelor of Arts program in the near future by completing some additional courses.

The students are continuing in the Bachelor of Education, after degree program, and will be completing this degree in approximately two years.  This program is also in the community. We will all be there to witness this accomplishment.

We would like to thank the University College of the North representatives that were present for the graduation ceremony.

– Davin Dumas, Director of Education

There is a community college that offers classes in Fisher River but this is the first time members don’t have to leave to earn a university degree.
The students are now preparing to begin the next step in the pilot program, the Bachelor of Education program that will also be based in Fisher River.
