This past year two loads of freezers and refrigerators were removed from the Fisher River landfill for proper disposal of the refrigerant they contain, and then to be recycled. To date 50 appliances have been disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
Freezers and refrigerators contain a refrigerant called HFC-134a, which is a greenhouse gas 1800 times stronger than CO2 (carbon dioxide). Yikes! If all that refrigerant in the 50 appliances was released into the atmosphere it would have been approximately the same as driving a car 33,500 kilometres.
Thank you to the landfill staff who set the appliances aside and helped to load them onto the truck and to the community members who brought their old appliances to the landfill.
