Another milestone in the fight against COVID-19 was achieved today as the start of the first round of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations began today in Fisher River Cree Nation.
Before vaccinations started, ceremony and prayers were taken place to bless the heath care providers giving the vaccinations and to the vaccine its self to provide safety and to give thanks.
Elder Stanley John McKay reminded everyone that there are millions of people in Canada whom are waiting for vaccine and we should give thanks and be humble to have it here in the community today.
Emotional remarks followed by Councillor Carl Cochrane who gave thanks to our health care providers and front line workers for doing and continue doing a great job in their fight against the virus.
The team then proceeded to the Ochekwi-Sipi Personal Care Home, where 10 elders along with 1 staff member kicked off the vaccinations. Vaccination of the remaining Elders and Staff will take place tomorrow.
The first 190 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine will be prioritized to Elders and Health Care Providers in the community.
The Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine is a two-dose vaccine.
Vaccine Roll Out Plan:

  • 17 Doses are allocated to Elders at the Ochekwi-Sipi Personal Care Home (Elders with compromised immune systems can not be vaccinated),
  • 50 Doses are allocated to Health Care Providers, and
  • 119 Doses are allocated to Elders in the Community.
  • Once the first doses of the vaccine are taken, the second dose is to be given 28 days later. It is important to commit to both doses to be fully vaccinated.

Elders who wish to take the vaccine can call the Fisher River Health Services COVID-19 Hotline at 431.256.0395 for an appointment (8:30am-4:30pm). Appointment bookings will begin on Monday January 11, 2021. Health Centre staff will also be calling Elders directly to book appointments if they wish to take the vaccine.
