Fisher River Cree Nation is deeply saddened to hear of the mass grave discovery of 215 children buried at the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia.
“On May 27, 2021, the buried remains of 215 children, some as young as three years old, were found at the site of the Kamloops Residential School in British Columbia. The school operated as a residential school from 1890 to 1969, which was then turned into a day school until finally closing in 1978. The building still stands, and is located on the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation.”
In an act of solidarity and support, our flags will fly at half-mast for the next 4 days starting May 31, 2021 along with a Sacred Fire at the Treaty Grounds. We are also asking that if you are able, please add to the memorial at the Powwow Arbour which was started by a community member. To honour the 215 lives lost, the hope is that there will be a pair of children’s shoes to represent each child.
Fisher River Cree Nation offers our heartfelt condolences to the mothers, fathers, grandparents, families and communities who are mourning for their loved ones who never made it home.
We ask that members follow the COVID-19 Security Measures protocols when attending the Sacred Fire and to only to go to offer tobacco and your prayers.
For our community members who need someone to talk to, please reach out to a family member, friend or the Rainbow House Wellness Centre (431.256.0359) for support. No one should suffer alone.
