Fisher River Cree Nation Chief & Council issued a state of emergency on April 29, 2022, regarding the high risk of flooding of the Fisher River due to the recent weather events.

CURRENT SITUATION:

To date, Health Services have completed the evacuation of identified medical concern dialysis patients, Jordan’s Principal clients, in-home community care clients and pre/post-natal clients to Winnipeg and Gimli. We thank the Board of Education for support in providing buses for the evacuation and our health team for their continuous work.

It has come to our attention that there are residents who have left the community prior to the extreme flooding that are unable to return. Traveling back to the community at this time is NOT recommended, as the state of the highways from the City of Winnipeg are unpredictable and flooding is taking place all over the Interlake. Residents from the community that cannot travel home are to contact the Fisher River Flood Command Centre for further information – 431.256.0041 or 431.256.1024. Reminder that this is for members who left the community prior to the extreme flooding.

Any members who are experiencing flooding of basements are to contact the Fisher River Flood Command Centre or the Housing On-Call number for further instructions – 431.256.0554

Members who feel there at risk of flooding are to contact the Fisher River Fire Department – 431.256.0077

While the highway is closed near Alison Murdock’s on Highway 224 – the West Road remains open and is not at risk of overland flooding. We ask members not to post information that is not official or confirmed as it can increase already high anxiety and stress with our community members.

Lastly, we ask for our community members patience and support during this difficult time. Lateral violence will not be tolerated as our emergency crews and frontline workers are working 24/7 to ensure the safety of our members. We all continue to put our best foot forward and work as diligently as possible.

REMINDER: Fisher River Emergency Management have secured two units of paramedics and ambulance that will be placed in the community in case of a health emergency, with Stars Air Ambulance on standby.

We will continue to update the community as needed.
