For Ron Sinclair and Faye Murdock, The Red Turtle Lodge Cultural Centre began as a vision 7 years ago. A vision that is now going to be brought to life with contributions by a working group consisting of Ron, Faye, community members/elders, Katina Cochrane with support from the Chief & Council.
The Red Turtle Lodge Cultural Centre will be a hub where members of the Fisher River Cree Nation and surrounding communities will gather, learn and share traditional practices with a special focus on the needs of men, women, children, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people; a place for everyone.
Today, with Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations on hand, together made the official announcement of the Red Turtle Lodge Cultural Centre project. The Government of Canada is providing $1.24 million towards construction of the centre, through the Cultural Spaces in Indigenous Communities Program (CSICP); a contribution that would not have been made without the hard work of the working group.
The Red Turtle Lodge Cultural Centre will be located across the from the Carl “Poggy” Cochrane Recreation Grounds, making it easily accessible for everyone.
We thank Ron & Faye for sharing their vision with us; a vision that will be shared with the entire community, not only locally but with the surrounding communities.
