The Fisher River community is proud to announce the official Grand Opening of the Ka pah pak Women’s Transitional Housing Shelter, a beacon of light for women seeking refuge from violence and abuse.

Named after the Cree word for “Butterfly,” the Ka pah pak program signifies a journey of transformation and empowerment, enabling women and their children to transition to a life of beauty and safety. This vital initiative is part of the Programming offered by the First Nation Healing Centre, dedicated to providing a sanctuary for those in need.

The Grand Opening ceremony paid tribute to the dedication and commitment of Former Chiefs Lorne Cochrane, Sam Murdock, and Chief David Crate, as well as past and present Councils, for their instrumental role in bringing essential women’s safety and shelter services to the community. Special recognition was given to Executive Director Katina Cochrane for her visionary leadership in spearheading this transformative project.

Generous contributions from Fisher River Economic Development Corporation, and Indigenous Management Group, with a $10,000.00 donation from each, will be instrumental in the realization of the Transitional Housing Centre. The unwavering support of funders Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) has been crucial in making this dream a reality.

Featuring 5 unit living quarters and a Child Care program, the Ka pah pak Women’s Transitional Housing Shelter stands as a symbol of hope, healing, and new beginnings for women in need. With a mission to provide a safe haven for growth and empowerment, the shelter is poised to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those it serves.
