Community Worker-Peer Support
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Health and Social Service Coordinator
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Community Worker assists clients/families to access culturally safe care and navigate the mental health and addictions system while engaged in recovery services in Fisher River Cree Nation. The position will work directly with clients supported in the Mobile Withdrawal Management Services (MWMS) team. The Community Worker facilitates and supports communication between clients/families/health care providers as they seek care for their management of substance use and recovery journey. The CW participates and engages in client/family care meetings, Mobile WMS team meetings, and acts in accordance with Fisher River Cree Nation policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
- Grade twelve (12) high school education or equivalent (e.g. GED)
- Knowledge of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous services and resources
- Knowledge of health issues impacting Indigenous Specific knowledge/or life experience in substance use impacting Indigenous communities is an asset
- Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook applications
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills
- Completes and maintains a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector Search, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
- Requires a valid Class 5 driver’s license, an all-purpose insured vehicle
ESSENTIAL BASIC DUTIES
- Assists clients/families with facilitating culturally relevant care and ceremony.
- Facilitates client/family participation in care by providing information about various programs and
- Helps clients/families receiving withdrawal management services become self-advocates, experts and decision-makers around their own health by providing clients/families with access to information that will support them with decision-making.
- Helps create a welcoming and positive experience for clients while they are engaging with the MWMS team and utilizing Fisher River Cree Nation
- Works collaboratively with other health care professionals and community organizations on issues and problems within the health care system related to substance use to improve services for Indigenous clients/families.
- Establishes an effective working relationship with client/family.

- Establishes and maintains professional boundaries with client/family while refraining from imposing own beliefs, values and lifestyle on client/family
- Contributes to making the organization safe for patients, residents, clients and staff, and recognizes the importance of reporting unsafe situations and participating in follow up reviews as a learning opportunity
