As part of the important transition of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation (Freshwater) from a crown corporation to an Indigenous-owned company—where fishers have become the shareholders—Chief David Crate, Sam Murdock, Director of Operations for Fisher River Cree Nation, and Tyler Morin, Manager of Saskatchewan Fisheries, were invited to join Team Canada’s Trade Mission to Seoul, South Korea. This strategic mission is opening doors to international seafood export markets and beyond!
This opportunity is a game-changer not only for Freshwater but also for communities and businesses across Canada, as it paves the way to explore global partnerships in fisheries and food production. South Korea serves as a vital hub in the global seafood distribution network and acts as a gateway to broader Asian markets, including Japan, Singapore, and Southeast Asia.
Why does this matter? Canada’s premium freshwater fisheries, especially those from Manitoba, offer high-quality, wild-caught species like Walleye (pickerel), Whitefish, and Northern Pike—species highly prized in international markets where sustainably harvested, wild fish command premium prices over farmed alternatives.
By engaging directly with Korean seafood importers and distributors, Freshwater is gaining critical insights into Asian market standards for packaging, quality, and certification. This engagement is also uncovering exciting opportunities for value-added processing and unique branding partnerships.
The strong demand in Korea for sustainably harvested, environmentally responsible, community-produced, and First Nation-led seafood perfectly aligns with the stewardship traditions practiced by many Indigenous fisheries across Canada.
This mission goes beyond fisheries—it is about shaping the future of Canada’s role in global food supply chains, natural resource development, and international investment. For Freshwater and Canada as a whole, this represents a bold and historic step toward unlocking long-term economic opportunities in fisheries, processing, and international food distribution under Indigenous ownership and leadership.
