Matrimonial Real Property Law Does Not Pass due to not meeting the Voting Requirements

The Fisher River Cree Nation held a ratification vote on the Matrimonial Real Property Law, an important step toward asserting greater control over family property matters within the community. While a majority of those who voted supported the law, the measure did not pass due to Indigenous Services Canada’s ratification requirement that at least 25% of eligible voters participate in the vote.

Out of 3,653 eligible voters, only 165 individuals (in-person/online) took part in the vote. This represents approximately 4.5% voter turnout, significantly below the 25% threshold required. The minimum number of participants needed to meet the requirement was 914 voters.

We want to sincerely thank all Fisher River band members who took the time to participate in this important vote. Your engagement and commitment to community governance are vital. Although the law did not pass this time, your voices and involvement continue to shape the future of Fisher River Cree Nation.
