The Honourable Doyle Piwnuik, Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure and the Honourable Alan Lagimodiere, Minister of Indigenous Reconciliation and Northern Relations along with their respective teams from the province met with Chief & Council and staff to discuss the 2022 Spring Flood along with other issues that concern the community.
Because Fisher River Cree Nation is situated at the mouth of the Fisher River where it empties into Lake Winnipeg (Fisher Bay), the community faces significant flood risks from all directions: the Fisher River, Lake Winnipeg and overland flooding from drainages outside of Fisher River and Peguis.
Both the ministers have committed to working with Chief & Council for long term flood mitigation, community access during flooding, as well as consistent environmental consultation regarding the Lake Manitoba & Lake St. Martin Outlet Channels and its impacts with the wildlife, traditional medicines and fishing.
Fisher River Cree Nation will continue to pressure the province and federal governments for a long term solution.
