Recreation Worker
1-Year Term

First Nation Healing Centre is a non-profit organization which is seeking a Recreation Worker. The Recreation worker will plan, organize, and lead a variety of internal activities and community outings for shelter residents. The primary goal is to promote social connection, build life skills, and improve the overall well-being of clients in a supportive, trauma-informed environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Planning & Execution

  • Design monthly calendars of internal and external activities.
  • Coordinate external outings including booking transport, securing tickets, and managing logistics.
  • Lead group sessions directly, ensuring a welcoming, inclusive, and encouraging atmosphere.
  • Assess client interests and feedback to continuously adapt and improve programming.

Client Support & Safety

  • Apply trauma-informed care practices to support clients with diverse backgrounds and high needs.
  • Manage risks during outings by conducting safety assessments and enforcing shelter boundaries.
  • De-escalate conflicts calmly using crisis intervention and verbal de-escalation techniques.
  • Encourage participation while respecting client autonomy and varying comfort levels.

Administration & Collaboration

  • Manage program budgets for supplies, event admissions, and transportation costs.
  • Maintain detailed logs of client attendance, engagement levels, and incident reports.
  • Build community partnerships with local museums, parks, and venues for free or discounted access.
  • Collaborate with case managers to align activities with clients’ individual housing or goals.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: will accept High School Diploma, preferably relevant post secondary education or experience in related field.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR/AED.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention or Mental Health First Aid.
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean abstract (highly preferred for driving clients on outings).
  • Skills: Strong conflict resolution, budgeting, cultural humility, and event planning abilities.
