Land Code 2020

Clarification Between the Reconciliation Project & Land Code Initiative

There seems to be some confusion as what the Reconciliation Project is. For clarification purposes, the Reconciliation Project is separate from the Land Code Vote presently being discussed in the community. Yes, the two will eventually coincide in the future as will all community departments. Please note that neither the Reconciliation Process or Land Code Vote will abrogate or derogate from any aboriginal, treaty or other rights or freedoms that pertain to community members; nor will there ever be any form of taxation placed on community members; and, hereditary ownership of land will never be taken away from community members.
Many people have heard the term self-government being used but please remember that this concept is not an immediate event that is going to happen right now or if at all. It is very far off into the community’s future. There will be information and continued discussions and meetings regarding the reconciliation process. When the time comes, the community will vote to determine the outcome. There will be no unilateral decision made by the Leadership.
Right now, the focus is on creating good governance structures by developing policies to be used by FRCN going forward such as a Custom Election Code, Consultation Policy, Constitution, Board Structures & Responsibilities. As drafts become available, they will be posted on the Reconciliation Project website. Please remember that all policies developed in accordance with creating a strong governance structure will be put to a vote by community members.
In addition, the Reconciliation team will continue to hold meetings and working group sessions with community members. These meetings are for community members to share their ideas as to what they think is needed in the community; and, to discuss their concerns in order to assist in developing plans and programs that will best assist our members. Everyone needs to be heard during this process. Your concerns and ideas will help to determine what our community is going to look like for future generations.
For those who have not been able to attend any meetings or working group sessions, we invite you to call or email our office. We will gladly meet with you to discuss the Reconciliation Project and hear your concerns and ideas. Please do not hesitate to contact Lorne at 204-799-3484 or Tanya at 204-645-4505 or by email: [email protected].
